ON THE WEB: HOW TO BREAK A SPEED RECORD WHILE LYING DOWN

by Hazed

When I was a kid I used to have great fun in the winter when it snowed, by lying on one of my mother's teatrays and sliding down a hill. Somehow, using a tin tray was a lot more exciting that using a real sledge.

Now I am a grown up and I have been amused over recent years to note that one of the sports in the winter Olympics is nothing more than a person lying on a tin tray and sliding down a hill. It's called the luge, and there really isn't a great deal more to it than that, unless you count the snazzy figure-hugging suits they wear.

But for some, this low-tech method of transportation is not enough. No, one man wanted to see how fast he could go when lying on a tin tray - sorry, a luge. And so, he attached a jet motor to a luge, the type with wheels that is used on concrete rather than snow, and attempted to break the world record. See a film of this mad stunt, and read an interview with him, here: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/exclusive-interview/joel-king-breaks-world-speed-record-on-jet+powered-luge-294996.php
