REAL LIFE NEWS: THE INTERNET MADE ME PREGNANT

by Hazed

Now here's a headline that brings all sorts of interesting pictures to mind: "China blames internet for rise in teen pregnancies". Is this some new communications protocol they have invented: insemination over IP?

Sadly, the story turns out to be a lot less wild than that. Apparently, nearly half of the pregnant teenagers in Shanghai say that they met their partners on the internet. A doctor who oversees a first-aid hotline for pregnant teens in the city said that of the 20,000 teenager girls who called over the past two years, 46% said they had had sex with boys they met on the internet.

Now, I am no statistician, but even I can see that it means 54% of them met their sex partners elsewhere, and unless there are any comparable figures showing where non-pregnant teenagers met their sex partners it's pretty meaningless. Still, it won't stop the authorities (or the media) from going on about how the internet makes people have sex - because, obviously, before the internet nobody ever had sex outside of marriage.
