FED PHRASE GAME (Early Edition)

Wednesday 4 April
by Gwaptiva

This week, the portable wheel found a temporary home in the Urban Spaceman Bar, a busy spot on the planet Venus. It is in a prime location, handily situated near the exchange and the Armstrong Cuthbert offices. That is why Cloudbase, Supermayman, Garioso and Sean could all find it easily, but of course, the draw of the Phrase Game would even get the punters to come to deepest Sumatra.

Supermayman started the first game off poorly, by spinning a Bankrupt in his search for a three-word event. Sean, Garioso nor Cloudbase could capitalize, however, each asking for consonants not in the phrase. Mayman then started a sequence wherein each player guessed a letter right, then one wrong. In the end, it was Mayman though who took control of the game. He didn't slip up once he got a good start, much to the chagrin of Sean, who had spotted the solution a little before the others. First strike to Supermayman with 2200 points, after figuring out "Myths and Legends" was the phrase.

Sean started the search for a two-word phrase in the category Objects. He turned over control early on to Cloudbase, who seemed to have spotted the solution early on, but, being still behind Mayman, continued to spin for points. And as is not uncommon in such situations, spun once too often, and gave the game to the fruit of his loins. Sean was once again left dismayed after spotting that the solution was Thick Llama-Burgers, but not getting a chance to solve it. Mayman solved it again, increasing his lead to 2950 points, with the others yet to score.

The chase to catch Supermayman was on, Cloudbase going in search of a three-word Institution. He had no trouble at all, spinning up point after point, until he was only 450 behind his son. Then, having spotted the solution, the previous experience with losing his turn while close to the win, he decided to solve the phrase as Lansky Construction Company, once again showing the benefit of paying close attention to one's environs when dealing with akaturi jobs.

So, as so often, with only the final phrase to go there was still everything to play for. And this time it wasn't just a phrase. Garioso had only been dipping his head round the door of the Urban Spaceman sporadically during the game, and so the final puzzle was kicked off by Mayman. He found two consonants, but then bought a vowel that wasn't in the phrase, giving Sean a chance at taking the game. He did spin up 1000 points, but then couldn't find a consonant that was actually in the phrase, and Cloudbase got his chance. But he blew it. Then, out of nowhere almost, Garioso turned up, and looked for a moment like taking the game. He didn't though, and Mayman this time proved his soubriqet by solving the final phrase as Clock Punching Monkeys Inc and taking the victory.
