So much modern technology today works like magic. It comes in sealed boxes and just does whatever it's supposed to do when you flip a switch or twiddle a knob. You have no idea what's going on inside it, or how it actually works. If, like me, you're curious as to exactly how things work then this web site is for you.

How Stuff Works is full of explanations of exactly that - and not just technology but also sociological processes such as "how autopsies work" and "how gene pools work", and physical stuff like "how hardwood floors work". It's one of those sites you go to in order to find out something specific, and end up getting side-tracked and spending hours browsing through the different articles.
