CRYPTOGRAMS

Saturday October 28
by Catspaws

It's been a trying week for the kitty, with some major upheavals on Catseye as well as odd people trying to dye my fur black for some strange reason. I felt I deserved a special meal, so I set my Kitty Cruiser for Earth and headed out to enjoy a delicious feast in Orran's Ox Roast. I was just about to badger a waitdroid into helping me pull a wishbone when some of my Cryptograms players rushed in demanding a game. Luckily, I had a sheet of puzzles stashed in my boot.

I have great respect for the Manufacturers in Fed. Sure, they make good money, but they're always having to fix something, or check something. They're always busy, or at least, they seem that way. Hence, I dedicated this week's puzzles to those dedicated manufacturers who help those of us who have our own little corners of the galaxy by building factories to fill our deficits.

The first puzzle covered the names of Manufacturers (naturally). Gilar beat out Ariadne and Zand in solving this nice little warmup puzzle.

NAMES OF MANUFACTURERS:
ILPIKLLNC
EQPJLKQB
TVDFJSK
BDJMLDC
USDQZS
OBGISY

One thing any manufacturer will tell you is that most biological goods are profitable, yet as scarce as hens' teeth. So the second puzzle dealt with biological commodities. Emie showed up just as I gave out this puzzle, so she was in time to play. Gilar again beat out the others in solving this puzzle. He's really getting to be quite good at Cryptograms, in Fancy's class, I would say.

BIOLOGICAL COMMODITIES (http://www.ibgames.net/fed2/guide/trading/commod.html):
NQBEFWBRVKHVW
DQFBFNKFIHIPW
PFLQBNTIBCHEW
VRDFERPQETHW
WHIWFEW
PERBHEW

If you do a 'DISPLAY COMPANIES', you will see that the names of our companies in Fed are humorous, entertaining, and sometimes downright silly. Gilar and Ariadne beat Emie and Zand in solving this one.

COMPANY NAMES:
VDTZWZAPGHT / CZGCTQTWPCP
BCL / CXCVCZG / WZK
UMWTXUWZF / WZFJPGTWCP
OWTJP / CZGCTQTWPCP
YDUX / WZFJPGTWCP
MHTF / KMCCPC / HZF / DXF / UMWZCP

After that brain-challenging puzzle it was a relief to switch to an easier puzzle, so we took a look at commands merchants use. (Don't ask me why, but we did.) Gilar finished this one ahead of the others, giving him a four-point lead over Ariadne going into the final puzzle.

COMMANDS MERCHANTS USE (http://www.ibgames.net/fed2/commands/index.html):
IGSFYOR / W / CFHI
IGMTWKG / CWHXKZSRMN
YGTT / MFEEFIORN
IOYSTWN / UWKGLFZYG
MLGMX / SKOMG
CZN / UWKGLFZYG

For the final puzzle, I had to pay tribute to the coming holiday by providing a list of creepy characters that make Halloween such fun. Emie and Ariadne actually beat out Gilar in solving this puzzle. (I feel so proud!)

HALLOWEEN CREATURES:
OBKEKMGDO
OCXSKUO
WGYJXKO
FIGOMO
YGDOMKUO
AXMLIKO

When the scores were tallied, Gilar came in first, Ariadne came in second (watch out, guys, she's a natural at this!) and Zand beat out Emie by a single point to secure the third place slot. Join me each Saturday at 4.00pm eastern for Cryptograms, the game that challenges your brain.
