CRYPTOGRAMS

Saturday October 21
by Catspaws

Halloween is approaching. This is a holiday I am not overly fond of, because it can be a bit dangerous to be a feline around this time. Fortunately, I am not a black cat, so that helps somewhat. One thing I do like about Halloween is there are lots of creepy, crawly things to chase - like spiders. Which is what led me to the Sierpinsky lounge on Silk, which is where the Cryptograms players found me this week.

Our first puzzle was an easy warmup puzzle easily solved by Gilar, then by Zand, Ariadne and Caesar.

PLAYERS WHOSE NAMES BEGIN WITH "S" (QW or WHO):
KBOLNOHQ
KZXPPRT
KYOBBT
KOKKT
KFLUBFJ
KBUNOH

The second puzzle revealed the underlying theme of the week: "Starting with S". Our newcomer, Ariadne, easily beat out our old hands to score top points with this puzzle.

COMMODITIES THAT BEGIN WITH "S":
HUENRH
HRFHJKUH
HOFXYH
HRKEH
HRFHLCH
HXIQELH

The third puzzle was a bit harder, but only because in a DI SYSTEMS readout, the planet names are not in alphabetical order. Gilar managed to finish ahead of the others, giving him a three-point lead over Ariadne and Zand going into the next puzzle.

PLANETS WHOSE NAMES BEGIN WITH "S" (DI SYSTEMS):
VLTA
VWTWRN
VFHNIBN
VIGBHJ
VSNIIWBWU
VDGILN

Finding the systems was a bit easier, as Gilar demonstrated by again finishing ahead of the others. Going into the final puzzle he had a five point lead over Zand, who was ahead of Ariadne by a point.

SYSTEMS WHOSE NAMES BEGIN WITH "S" (DI SYSTEMS):
FUGRHFH
FUHZZG
FOUWEHZ
FOGZJQDYF
FHZHBLHWU
FHDZHW

The final puzzle covered commands, and wasn't as easy as you would think. Gilar finished first, of course, with Ariadne finished second.

COMMANDS THAT BEGIN WITH "S" (http://www.ibgames.net/fed2/commands/index.html):
RHGMZ
RUNQ
RDKCC
RBWUZD / UNDGJZ
RJNIZ
RDNIZ

When the scores were tallied, Gilar was in first place, with Zand and Ariadne tied for second. Gilar donated two slithies to his runners-up as consolation. What a champ!

We play Cryptograms each Saturday at 4.00pm on the Cryptograms channel. To try to become a champion like Gilar, you can practice the puzzles printed in the Star each week, then join us in the game. We'll hold a seat for you.
