MY FUEL GAUGE IS USELESS

Sometimes I wonder why they bother to put fuel gauges into spaceships, when they are as much use as a lead parachute. Just think about it for a moment and I know you'll agree with me.

You're flying around space, and you check your fuel gauge and notice it's getting low. Time to buy some more fuel. So you park your ship in orbit and take the shuttle down to the ground, and do whatever you came to the planet to do. When you get back into your ship, you notice the fuel gauge again and realize you forgot to fill up. Doh! So you think, never mind, I'll remember the next planet I visit. But it slips your mind again, until finally you realize you are stranded in space with an empty tank, and have to pay the inflated price for some lowlife tanker driver to come out and give you a few tons of the stuff.

You see, when you're looking at the fuel gauge, you don't want to buy fuel, because in space it's a zillion times more expensive. And when you're on the ground where the cheap fuel is available, you've got nothing to remind you to buy it, unless you tie a knot in your spacesuit or tattoo a reminder on your arm.

So you might as well not bother with a fuel gauge at all.
