FEDPARDY

Tuesday July 4
by Fancy-Fancy

Today's Fedpardy was held at a special early time, giving our friends in Europe and the UK a chance to play one of the events normally held while they sleep. Five players in all showed up at the studio - Gwaptiva, Ondine, Zadymka, Maxwell, and Bluehorseshoe. I went over the rules for all our players, and when that was done revealed the categories I would use today - When Born by the Red, White, and Blue; Apple "Pi"; Fire; and Works. Ondine gained the first selection of the game, and selected the Red, White, and Blue category for 1.

The game started off with a couple of misses, Gwaptiva missing on that opening answer for 1, and Zadymka on the 2 before Gwaptiva scored the first positive points of the game by correctly questioning the 3 point answer. Gwaptiva selected the Apple "Pi" category for 1, and Ondine got on the board when she rang in and got it, then went back to Red, White, and Blue, where she found the first Daily Double of the game. Ondine decided to risk 1 point on the Daily Double, and this was its answer:

The mansion on Earth has thick velvet curtains in this color framing the drawing room windows.

Ondine tried, "What is blue?", but that wasn't the correct one. The curtains there are red. That cost her a point, but she still had control and selected the 5 point answer to finish the category. Gwaptiva, Ondine, and Zadymka all tried it, and all missed it, losing 5 points each. Ondine selected Apple "Pi" for 2 next, and Gwaptiva got it, then started the Works category for 1. Zadymka dug out of her early hole with this category, giving the correct questions to the 1, 2, and 3 point answers to take us to the break. At the break, she was the leader with -1, followed by Gwaptiva with -4, and Ondine with -5.

Ondine got the first selection of Double Fedpardy, with all remaining point values doubled, and selected Works for 8. Gwaptiva rang in and got it to get on the plus side. Gwaptiva then started the Fire category (which was about the Fire mini-planet). Ondine missed on the 2 point answer, and Zadymka picked it up with the correct question. Zadymka then took Apple Pi for 6. She collected those points to take the lead, the 8 point answer got passed, and Gwaptiva then rang in and got the 10 point answer to take the lead back. Gwaptiva then selected Works for 10 and found... the other Daily Double! With 14 points to Zadymka's 7, Gwaptiva elected to make the Daily Double worth 4 points, and this was the answer:

After nanos, one of the commodities a factory can produce which will put a minimal number of people to work.

Gwaptiva responded, "What is alloys?", but that was incorrect. Correct responses would have been lub-oils or propellants, each of which only takes 10 labor. That took Gwaptiva's score down to 10, but he still had the selection and lead, and selected Fire for 4. Gwaptiva got the 4 pointer, missed the 6, and got the 8, before everyone passed on trying the 10. That brought us to the end of Double Fedpardy, and our scores were:

Gwaptiva: 16
Zadymka: 7
Ondine: -7

Gwaptiva and Zadymka advanced to Final Fedpardy, with the chance to wager as many of their points as they wished. I thanked Ondine for playing today. To help Gwaptiva and Zadymka decide how much they wanted to risk, I presented the category of * Freedom and Independence *. Gwaptiva and Zadymka decided their wagers, and when I had them, explained how Final Fedpardy works, and verified the Finalists were ready, I presented today's Final Fedpardy answer:

This organization, once borderline illegal, has become almost respectable in recent years, and campaigns for Venusian Independence. Rumors abound that some of its members will do anything to advance their cause.

When the timer was up, we took a look at their responses and wagers. Zadymka wrote down, "what are the Venus freedom fighters?" Close, but not it, so that cost her. Zadymka bet all 7 of her points, leaving her with nothing.

That brought us to Gwaptiva, who responded, "What is the Venusian Independence League?" That wasn't it, either. The correct response was "What is the Venus Freedom Party?" Gwaptiva's wager was 6 points, leaving him with 10 points. That was still enough to make him this week's Fedpardy champion!

Congratulations to Gwaptiva, our champion on this 4th of July, as well as to Zadymka, our runner-up. Thanks also to Ondine for playing in today's game. I hope those who can will show up again for the next Fedpardy on July 18, starting at 10.00pm eastern. And on July 11, join me for the Fed Phrase Game, also starting at 10.00pm eastern.
