CRYPTOGRAMS

by Catspaws
Sunday June 18

Spring is almost to a close, which is why I was caught on Rhea (again!) borrowing....I mean, purloining....well, I was looking for the beef. With summer coming, I wanted to ensure Catseye's freezers were well stocked for spur-of-the-moment barbecues and pool parties. But, did the authorities on Rhea understand this? Nooooooooo! Why, they even had wanted posters posted around the planet with MY picture on them! How rude! They said I was a wanted criminal on Rhea for cattle rustling. After being frog-marched (which is a funny sight when you walk on four legs and are wearing cowboy boots on all four paws) to the shuttle pad and told never to darken Rhea space again, I retired to Fedruckers for a hamburger as well as to sulk - and plot.

This is my explanation for why Cryptograms was a day late this week. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Anyway, Fedruckers is where the die-hard Cryptograms players tracked me down and demanded their weekly puzzle fix. Lucky for them, I happened to have five puzzles ready for their enjoyment.

Having learned from the week before that puzzles with a common theme and the same number of letters in each entry can be challenging, I retained this method for the first few puzzles. Indeed, it did prove a challenge, but Gwaptiva (Go, Gwap!), Gradon and Fancy finally figured it out, but I totally stumped Robius. (Yay, me!)

PLAYER NAMES WITH FIVE LETTERS:
N W T T N
W H X X F
C W T U F
S J J K T
K J B F N
N W J H N

Fancy and Gradon figured out the second puzzle rather quickly, though Gwaptiva, after a few false starts, figured it out as well. Robius got the puzzle as well, and our trainee player, Westdene, bravely followed in Gwaptiva's footsteps by solving four entries.

COMMODITY NAMES WITH SEVEN LETTERS (http://www.ibgames.net/fed2/guide/trading/commod.html):
U E Y N F X C
X R S L H X C
G X H T H G C
C N R V H L C
N Z F G Y Z C
J Y F Q L T C

The next puzzle was a salute to our brave founders who have worked their way up the ranks and now live the good life of ease and prosperity (yeah, right!) on their own little corners of Fedspace. Since today is Father's Day, I used only the names of male founders in the puzzle. Going into this puzzle, we had a three-way tie between Fancy, Gradon and Gwaptiva. Gradon took the lead with this puzzle, followed by Fancy and Gwaptiva.

MALE FOUNDERS (DI SYSTEMS):
P C M G C T
C G S M T D R
A M P T B G M
G O D S S U
P V C O L M T F C D A
W Y M A S G P V

Once the glorious rank of Trader is completed, you are able to branch out into the corporate world by purchasing your own company. The next puzzle was a tribute to the budding corporate leaders of today. Fancy, Gradon and Gwaptiva finished this puzzle, followed by Robius.

COMPANY NAMES (DI COMPANIES):
W Z V R F T G / K E U U O I B K Z H B E I N / N S N H T U N
G T N Q T V Z G E N / K E V Q E V Z H B E I
W E F G T I / I O W W T H / T I H T V Q V B N T N
B U Q T V B Z F / H T K X I E F E W B T N
W V T Z H / R O I N / R Z P T V S
I Z P T G / O I B J Z H E V N / O I F B U B H T G

As today was a special day, the final puzzle was a tribute to Dad and all those beautiful and fascinating presents they receive every year. Fancy, Robius and Gradon finished this puzzle, as did Gwaptiva, while Westdene solved 5 of the 6 entries. (I predict next week Westdene will be on Robius' heels.)

GIFTS FOR FATHER'S DAY:
Q / D E R K / R T K Q A / R Q C N
Q D / M S H F / V E K
Q / R T K Q A / V P P H / I K V
I V E D Y F / R P H P S D K
J C K Q Y G Q I V / J M C D V / J F / V T K / Y E N I
M S H F / A E D Y / I T E C V

When the scores were tallied, Fancy finished first, while Gradon came in second and Gwaptiva came in third. We play Cryptograms every Saturday at 4.00pm eastern on the Cryptograms channel. And, if you want the answers to this week's puzzles, have some ideas for a puzzle topic, or just want to tell me how superior I am to Jessecka, especially as a game hostess, you can email me at catspaws_fed@sbcglobal.net.
