STAR CHAMBER

Why do we play Fed2?

I play Fed2 for the fun and relaxation and warped humour and intellectual challenge but most of all I play Fed2 because of its incredible community.

Recently Gwarrior popped into Fed2 for the first time in ages. He had just graduated from boot camp and was on 3 days leave. Wow! I am so incredibly proud of him. That is a genuine achievement. Bravo, GW! (He's promised to send us a photo of himself in uniform.)

GW is one reason I play Fed2. I've virtually watched him grow up. Watched him develop critical thinking skills, watched how the Fed community helped shape him as a person, whether good or bad. In tightbeams over the years, GW has said the most astoundingly awful things to and about me and he's also been astoundingly candid and revealing about his own private hopes and fears. And now he's taken his destiny in his own hands and I'm so very proud of him.

A few weeks ago, I found out Grace had finally lost her battle with poor health. I met Grace in AOL Fed many years ago. She found us because she was stuck on daily dialysis and wanted something to distract her and help the time pass. What a zany, cheerful, madcap Irishwoman Grace was. She was a Baroness and when she finally went into hospital for her long awaited kidney transplant, her loyal duchy members sent flowers - addressed to Duchess Grace! I'm told the nurses were astounded.

I've watched Fed teach so many young players critical thinking skills, open the world to players from small towns in the US mid-west who met their first non-US friends in DataSpace. I've watched many female players grow in confidence and self-esteem in Fed and then take those positive qualities into the Real World(tm) to build new lives for themselves, going on to university and new careers.

I've watched people make deep and lasting friendships in Fed that carried over to the Real World(tm). I've met a lot of Fed players outside the game at Fed UnCons and Meets. Had hilarious adventures in game and out with fellow players.

So that's a little bit of why I play Fed2.

Why do you? Send me your reasons for why YOU play Fed2 to barb.byro@gmail.com. I'll publish them in next week's Fed Star. Make sure to let me know if you want your persona name listed or withheld to protect the guilty ;)
