REAL LIFE NEWS: UNDERWATER SURGERY Speaking of underwater things, NASA recently sent three astronauts and a doctor to an underwater lab, where they could try out medical techniques in a simulated space environment. The techniques developed may one day be used in real space emergencies. For three weeks last month, the astronauts in the Aquarius underwater lab off the Florida keys were directed in surgeries by doctors thousands of miles away. The team also practised "undersea moonwalking techniques" which sounds like some kind of disco dance step. But the best thing of all is that the project is called "NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operation project" - which contracts to the acronym 'NEEMO'. Very witty! |
