REAL LIFE NEWS: A WINDOW ON THE UNDERWATER WORLD

Marine scientists would love to have a way to watch what goes on underwater, and that's the goal of the Undersea Window - a camera which will be placed on the ocean floor, 100 metres below sea level off the coast of Vancouver Island, to relay images in real time. This will offer scientists a unique opportunity to watch all kinds of underwater phenomena such as plankton blooms, fish migrations and volcanic eruptions.

Scientists will be able to direct the camera installations by remote control, so they will be able to interact with the marine world in real time, rather than having to collect data from stationary instruments.

The Undersea Window is a joint project between McGill University, who are responsible for the underwater camera, the software and the internet technology that will stream the images from the seabed to the scientists' computers, and the University of Victoria, which will handle the deployment of the camera and a remotely operated undersea vehicle used for installation and maintenance.

More details on the Undersea Window web site.
