REAL LIFE NEWS: THE SPACESUIT SATELLITE Next week, astronauts aboard the International Space Station are going to send an empty spacesuit out of the airlock. This space-walking spacesuit will become the first "SuitSat". The Russian Orlan suit features three batteries, a radio transmitter, and internal sensors to measure temperature and battery power. As it circles the Earth, it will transmit its condition to the ground. Anyone with a radio receiver and an antenna will be able to pick up the SuitSat's signals. You'll need to tune to 145.990 MHz FM during the 5 to 10 minute period that the SuitSat will be flying over your particular section of the sky. You can find out when that will be at the NASA satellite tracking web site. If you do pick up SuitSat, you will hear a a pre-recorded greeting in five languages followed by an English-language report on the suit's telemetry: temperature, battery power and mission elapsed time. For more information about the SuitSat, go to the Amateur Satellite web site. |
