Q: Wow! Is it really true that Fed2 is now free?

A: Yes, absolutely free. You can play the whole game, from GroundHog to the highest rank, without paying a penny.

Q: But you've always said it cost money to keep the game running.

A: Yes, it does, but from now we are going to be paying the running costs by selling extra goodies you can use in the game.

Q: What are Fed's running costs?

A: Fed (and the website and other stuff) runs on a server that we rent from a co-location facility in Manchester in the UK. We also have to pay the network costs that connect our servers to the Internet, so you can get to them. Plus, there's costs that have to be paid every year to do with legal requirements of running a company.

Q: How do these extras work?

A: You buy tokens, called slithy toves, by making a purchase using PayPal. You get one slithy tove for $5. All you need to do is click the button on our extras page, and that'll take you to PayPal's site. There you can log on and use your PayPal account, or just give your credit card details.

Q: How many slithies can I buy?

A: The minimum purchase is $10.00 (ten US dollars) which gets you 2 slithies, and the maximum is $50 (fifty US dollars) which buys 10 slithies. You can also subscribe and get a discount by buying slithies each month.

Q: Why should I buy slithies?

A: Well you don't have to - it's possible to rise through the ranks from GroundHog up to the top levels without any of the extra goodies. But they do make the game easier, or more fun, or just act as a status symbol. Besides, your purchase helps us to keep Fed2 running.

Q: What exactly is a slithy tove?

A: A slithy tove is a very rare alien creature. A certificate stating that you own a slithy tove is very valuable in its own right, and these certificates are exchanged as gifts and used as high-level bribes. You can read more about this corrupt system in the Encyclopedia Galactica.

Q: What kind of goodies can I get with a slithy tove?

A: You can get all kinds of things, both useful and decorative. For example, you can upgrade your ship's navigation computer so it will move you between the Sol planets automatically, rent a teleporter, get remote price checking, buy a keyring charm, and you can get married. There's also lots of enhancement to your planet you can buy when you get to the right ranks. There's a full list of what you can get using slithy toves here.

Q: How will you know which Fed2 character to give the slithies to?

A: You type in the character name when you make the purchase on PayPal's site, and it's included in the email notification that we are sent. But if you forget, don't worry, you can forward your PayPal receipt to feedback@ibgames.com and tell us the character name then. (Please put Fed2 somewhere in the subject line so your mail doesn't get eaten by our voracious spam filters.)

Q: How long will it take for the slithies to show up on my character?

A: We will add them to your character within 24 hours.

Q: Can I give the slithies to another player?

A: Yes, you can ask us to give the slithy to someone else. Or you can give a player one of your slithies in the game using the command 'GIVE playername SLITHY'.

Q: What do I get if I subscribe to Fed2?

A: If you subscribe, you pay $13 each month. For that, you get four slithies each month, which is a 25% increase. Four for the price of three. Bargain!

Q: What if I don't want to keep paying?

A: You can cancel the subscription at any time - email feedback@ibgames.com, giving your account ID, and ask for it to be cancelled. The only requirement is that you keep it for three months, otherwise you forfeit the extra slithy you have received each month.

For more information about subscriptions, go to the extras page.
